Jade Bi is a kind of flat circular jade with perforations in the center. It is one of the traditional jade ritual vessels in China and also one of the "six auspicious". The historical book Erya Shi Qi explains the shape of jade Bi in a more detailed way: "the good meat is the Bi, the good meat is the yuan, and the good meat is the ring."
这里的“肉”是指的是璧边的宽度，而“好”则指中间圆孔的孔径，意思是说边宽大于孔径的就是璧；孔径大于边宽则为瑗；若边宽与孔径一致则为环。
Here "meat" refers to the width of the edge of the wall, while "good" refers to the hole diameter of the middle circular hole, which means that the wall with the edge width larger than the hole diameter is the wall; the yuan with the aperture larger than the edge width is the yuan; and the ring with the edge width consistent with the hole diameter.

玉璧是中国玉器中出现最早并一直延续不断的品种，是很重要的瑞玉，战国至两汉是玉璧的鼎盛时期，，花纹形式多变，饰纹种类极为丰富，使用范围大增，数量也属历代之冠。

考古发现，玉璧最早产生于距今约5、6千年前的新石器时代，一直到清朝，都有不同形制和纹饰的玉璧出现。玉璧的应用范围也极为广泛，既是权力等级的标志，也可用于佩戴，亦能作为随葬品，同时又是社会交往中的馈赠品或信物。
It is found that jade Bi originated from the Neolithic Age about 5000 or 6000 years ago. Up to the Qing Dynasty, there were different shapes and patterns of jade Bi. Jade Bi is also widely used, not only as a symbol of power level, but also for wearing, as a burial object, and as a gift or keepsake in social interaction.
