宣统元年(公元1909年),部分省份开始制造宣统元宝银元,宣统二年颁布《币制则例》,规定国币以圆为单位,主币重库平七钱二分,含纯银九成,辅币有银、镍、铜币,规定银辅币有五角、二角五分和一角共三等。

银币正面中央珠圈内镌汉字“大清银币”,珠圈外上端镌满文,下端镌汉字“宣统三年”,左右两侧各镌一个对称的花饰。银币背面镌一个环状盘旋的曲须龙和大片云朵,内镌币值“壹圆”,下端镌币值壹圆的英文“ONE DOLLAR”。
